Over The Shoulder Exercise CSchlegel
Reflection: Describe how your group planned your shots. What realizations did you make about the kind of planning that needs to happen BEFORE you shoot? My group decided to write down all of the shots we should do and then compare them to the script we got so they would match up. I realized that you need to take into account the background and setting when creating the shot. You need to plan it all out so you can just get into the shooting instead of waiting and trying to freeball the shots.
Look at the composition of your over the shoulder shots. Did you follow the rule of thirds? Why or why not? In our shots we did not follow the rule of thirds that well. We could of moved our actors a little bit to the left or right so they would line up on the grid and be the main focal point instead of the setting that seem to happen in our video. like the people walking by or the building.
What IMPRESSIONS do the over the shoulder shots create about the characters? How does this work? The over the shoulder shot creates a tone between the two characters. Brad seemed to be a little more stern in delivering the message while Mikaela was very attentive in trying to figure out the news. This works by showing their facial expressions and their emotions while they deliver the dialogue to each other.
How realistic does the dialogue seem in the final edit? What challenges did you have in editing? The dialogue in our video seems pretty realistic in some spots, but in others it cuts kinda rough and may have skipped parts of their dialogue in some places. The challenges i had were the pieces of video were soo short that it was hard to edit them very cleanly, and the video was overall pretty short in length.
Is there a dominant mood or tone to your video? What is that mood or tone? How did you accomplish this? The mood in our video was a serious one. Brad wanted to deliver the news of the money while Mikaela wanted to figure out exactly how much and when she was going to get the money her aunt left her. We accomplished this by having them talk in a straight voice and a kinda low tone.
What other observations do you have about using over the shoulder shots? The other observations that i have about using the over the shoulder shot would be that it is great in the way that it shows the characters expressions in videos and their reactions to the other person talking to them. Also i noticed that the shot uses a lot of close cuts and edits if you want it to look really good.
What other ideas got emphasized or reinforced about how to make effective videos from doing this exercise? Other ideas that emphasize how to make effective videos would be the edits and clear cuts in this style of video shooting. Also the idea of shooting straight at the actors faces and getting their mood and overall tone express through the videos.
